Arizona Wedding Photography: What to Know Before Your Big Day
There’s something pretty special about getting married in Arizona. Between the desert landscape, mountains, warm sunsets, and incredible light, you really don’t have to go far to find a beautiful backdrop for your wedding photos. Whether you’re planning a luxury Scottsdale wedding, an intimate Phoenix celebration, a desert elopement, or a romantic Sedona wedding, Arizona offers something completely different from the traditional wedding setting. As an Arizona wedding photographer, I love that the landscape can be part of your story without taking away from the people who are actually at the center of it.
The Best Time of Year for Arizona Wedding Photography
Arizona weddings look beautiful year-round, but the season you choose can make a big difference in both the experience and your wedding photos. In the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, October through April tends to be the most comfortable time for outdoor weddings, with fall and spring being especially popular. Winter weddings can also be gorgeous, with mild daytime temperatures and beautiful low sunlight - just keep in mind that the sun sets much earlier, so your photography timeline may need to start earlier in the day.
Arizona Wedding Venues & Locations
One of my favorite things about Arizona wedding photography is how different each location can feel. Scottsdale is perfect for couples drawn to elegant resorts, desert-modern architecture, mountain views, and a more elevated feel. Phoenix offers everything from luxury hotels and private estates to gardens and more modern city venues.
And then there's Sedona. If you're dreaming of a wedding surrounded by red rocks, sweeping views, and that unmistakable Arizona landscape, Sedona is hard to beat. The red rock formations create a dramatic backdrop, but they're also beautiful at sunrise and sunset when the colors and shadows become softer. Other Arizona wedding destinations, including Flagstaff and Tucson, offer completely different scenery - from pine forests and mountain views to desert and historic Southwestern architecture. Wherever you choose to get married, your location becomes part of the story.
Planning Your Wedding Photography Timeline
One of the biggest things I help my couples with is creating a timeline that actually allows them to enjoy their wedding day. Arizona light is beautiful, but it isn't always forgiving. The middle of the day can bring strong, direct sunlight, while the hour before sunset gives us that softer, warmer light couples often love in their portraits.
Rather than trying to squeeze every photograph into one tiny window, I like to build photography naturally into the day. That might mean photographing some details and getting-ready moments earlier, taking a few portraits before the ceremony, or stepping away for 10–15 minutes during cocktail hour for sunset portraits. You don't need to spend your entire wedding day taking pictures to have beautiful wedding photos. The goal is to give you space to actually be present while still documenting the moments you'll want to remember.
